To read a QR code by hand

2026

Yet another awkward QR code is an art research project that we (Kaspar Ravel + Queenie F. Charles) developed under the collective name AT LEAST THEY TRIED, in accordance with our shared values : the search for digital literacy (ability to understand a tool but also that of repurposing it) in a seemingly complex world.

By taking QR codes as a study case, we provided simple examples of how people can adopt an active stance towards an everyday technology and avoid being subjugated to its use.

We began by mastering the art of decoding them by hand, which enabled us to outline a variety of techniques to both disarm & elevate the QR code to the status of a tactical tool.

The project, was composed of multiple facets: a workshop on how to decode QR codes by hand, a conference about our methods, a printed edition alongside an interactive website cataloguing our research, and visual explorations around QRs to be displayed in art exhibitions.
